Food for your Ipod - Winter 07/08 Mix Session

It's Mix Session time again - I seem to get round to these every six months or so. It's pretty representative of the kind of thing I'm playing out right now - 50% dirty and twisted, 50% uplifting and blissed out, 100% party music.

Manu Delago plays the Hang Drum

A friend of mine sent me this Youtube link, and I can't stop playing it.

I'd never heard of the Hang Drum until last week - absolutely mesmerizing sound - my inner hippy wants to sign up and go and get one from Berne as soon as possible (there's a long wait apparently!)

Blog Power

Depending on who you listen to, they are either the scourge of the recording industry or a fantastic new way to promote your music direct to fans. I'm talking about music blogs of course.

I'm definitely of the latter opinion - the technology isn't going to disappear, you can't uninvent the web or mp3s or IM or CDRs or Bittorrent or filesharing websites like Yousendit, Mediafire, Zshare et al, so it's utterly pointless moaning about it and longing for the old days - they ain't coming back.

In fact the Hype Machine is probably my main way of discovering new music these days, at least for non-dancefloor stuff. I get sent literally 100s of clubby promos every week from labels and producers, and in my free time I prefer to listen to other types of music, or else my mind would quickly dissolve into a kind of electro/house/rave mush, and we definitely don't want that.

And yes, if I really like it, I'll go and buy it.

Anyway, I'm really pleased that some of these music blogs have featured my tune "Regret", in particular the runners-up from the remix competition. Please go and check them out:

Hot Biscuits
TribalElectroDance
Boule A Facettes
Dhuun

Big ups to Kyle, Cristian, Vincent and Kapil for featuring the tune - keep supporting new music!

New Remix, Old Pics and Vid

My latest remix, for UK indie band Rocinante, is up on my myspace page. I have no idea when it's coming out, but I'm pretty chuffed with how it's turned out. Please check it out and leave a comment if you feel so inclined.

Also, while clearing out my studio I found a couple of CDRs and DVDs with pics and vids from some past gigs in Estonia (2004-2005), so I've thrown photos and clips up on Flickr and Youtube respectively - check the media section of my website, or the vid (10 minutes of it at least) is in the embedded player below.

Judge Jules plays Starstrings remix on Radio 1

Jules played my remix of Jody Wisternoff's latest release "Starstrings" on Radio 1 last Friday. Huge thanks to the Judge (who won't budge) - always a thrill to hear my stuff on the wireless!

Free mp3 Download!

Dumb Dan and I ran a remix competition during September 2007 for my track "Regret", and as promised we are making the runners up remixes available for download for free, in glorious maximum quality mp3 format.

And yes, that's free as in beer...however we do ask a couple of favours from you in return (feel free to choose):

Favour no. 1. Show your love: Leave us a comment on this blog post. Tell us what you think of the mixes.

Favour no. 2. Spread the love: Give any DJs you know and all your clubby mates the link to this post - if you're the geeky type, please bookmark it on del.icio.us et al, or link to us in your own blog...

Favour no. 3. Share the love: Feel free to fileshare on AIM/MSN/Gnutella etc... We'd prefer it if you shared the whole zip file since it includes all our info, but if you're going to share individual mp3s, please leave the id tags intact.

Favour no. 4. Spend some love: If you like the track, please go and buy one of the other mixes from Beatport, so that we can afford some of the above-mentioned beer.

Ok, that's quite enough blah blah, here is the link - enjoy!

South Korea and Egypt Debuts

Two debuts coming up! Next weekend I'll be playing in Seoul in South Korea - I'll be at Underlounge with DJ19 on 3rd November. Then a couple of weeks later on 16th November, I'll be at Thrust in Cairo in Egypt. Looking forward to both of these big time :-)

Musique vs U2 Video

Here's a blast from the past which I just found on Youtube... Nick Hanson and I looking rather starstruck in Fort Lauderdale:

Regret Remix Competition Winners

In the end, we found we couldn't decide between the best two entries... so we didn't - there are two winning mixes and both will be featured on the forthcoming commercial release of "Regret".

And the winners are:

Roman Rai (Czech Republic) Myspace
Roman Rai is one of the residents at the Roxy in Prague, and also heads up Solstice Records. His mix has a wicked retro feel, lots of musicality, as well as some great production touches and plenty of dancefloor bounce.

6884 (Italy) Myspace
6884 is a young producer from Turin - his remix is nothing short of amazing - moody, emotional and minimal, with more than a passing nod to Nathan Fake, James Holden and that whole Border Community vibe. Check the goose-bumbs inducing breakdown!

You can check both of these mixes out (as well as the three runners up) over at Dumb Recordings.

New Beatport Releases

"Regret" (Original/Daniel Linderberg Mixes) and "Love Key" (Justin C & Justin Xara Mixes) are out now via Beatport. Go seek :-)

Obbio in Seville

I had a great night in Seville the other weekend - the club is actually called Obbio (and not Taboo as I previously posted!) Thanks to Miguel and Nicko, and also big ups to the party crew who turned up and who left me messages in my website's guestbook (and sorry we didn't make it to the "ravas en el puente", but the hotel room beckoned)

Biggest tunes of the night were probably DJ Sender "Torque" and Patrick L - "Ringin", which worked so well together I've just put together a little re-edit/mashup...

Part of the night's promotion included place mats in one of the main square's restaurants with my face on them. Slightly disconcerting eating a meal off your own face, but the pizza and tapas were delicious ;-) I've been loving playing in Spain recently, and I should be back in Seville before the end of the year, as well as Barcelona.

Regret Runners Up Announced

After much Deliberation, Dumb Dan and I have finally chosen the runners up in the remix competition for my track "Regret". It wasn't an easy choice, we had lots of very good entries. Thanks to everyone who took part. The Runners-up are:

Chris James: Myspace
From the Midlands in the UK, Chris delivered a wicked techy remix, playing about with the original melody and keeping enough punch to move any floor.

Deutsche UnschuldMyspace
Aka Marc Kowalski from Hamburg in Germany, DU's epic interpretation features emotional gated pads, and clever techno touches.

Nathan Vain: Myspace
Hailing from San Francisco, Nathan heads down a more minimal route, with crisp beats,  phat bass and dark strings stabs.

The runners-up remixes will be available to download for free (yes that's right, for free) at the end of the month from mine and Dumb Recording's websites and Myspace pages.

The main winner will be announced on Friday and will feature on the full commercial release. Stay tuned!

Torre Del Lago and Seville

A few weeks ago I played Frau Marleen in Torre Del Lago in Italy - great crowd - a heady mix of fashionistas, club kids and drag queens, and a thundering sound system. The resident DJ, Matteo Matteini, played one of the best warm up sets I've ever heard - respect! And I had a blast during my set - all helped by a very enthusiastic reception from the people there. I'm definitely looking forward to playing a lot more in Italy in the future...

This weekend I'm at Taboo in Seville, in Andalucia. I really enjoyed my gig in Barcelona at the end of August, and it's great to be going back to Spain again.

Brand New Look

I've just changed my website's platform and theme, so for those of you that subscribe to my blog via email, apologies if you received my last few posts again earlier this week.

Hope you like the new look - please visit the site and leave me a comment :-)

Regret Remix Competition

My latest production, "Regret", has been signed to Dumb Dan's Dumb Recordings in Sweden, and we've decided to run a remix competition for the release.

Please check the following link for details on how to enter and to download all the necessary parts: Regret Remix Competition

The track will be out in October featuring remixes from Daniel Lindeberg, SL Curtiz, 2Special, plus the competition winner :-) In the meantime, you can check the original mix out in the player on my myspace page.

Tiesto playing my tunes

Tiesto has been playing some of my tunes lately on his Club Life mix show. He's been supporting Jody's remix of "Love Key" (which is out now on Beatport, DJDownload, etc) and also my remix of Antena & Carry's "Duduk" (which isn't available at all yet!)

Nice one Tijs!

Bratislava, Barcelona and Bulgaria

Ok, I'm cheating slightly - the last city is actually Sofia, but I didn't want to spoil the alliteration.

At the end of August, I played Bratislava and Barcelona, my first gigs since coming back from holiday, and neither city disappointed. I was over at Unique Club in the Slovakian capital - I've played there a few times and the crowd there are very friendly and up for it - it was great to hang out and meet some new faces.

After several Borovitchkas too many I (just about) made it over to Spain for my debut in the frankly lovely city of Barcelona. Cala Morisca is a great openair venue near Sitges overlooking the mediterranean sea with a beautiful party crowd - a real pleasure to play there.

Big ups to Andrey, Viktor, Nicko, Carlos and all the other people I met up with over the weekend. Will get some pictures up from the gigs on my Flickr site asap...

Next up as you probably gathered I'm going to Sofia in Bulgaria - on 7th September. I was last there a couple of years ago, and this time I'll be playing at Club Escape, which has recently hosted the likes of Demi, Eelke Kleijn and more. Looking forward to it!

Love Key Out Now

"Love Key" featuring Fisher is finally out - and is available now from Beatport, as well as all other major digital dance music download stores. Vinyl is coming next week. It's also snuck into the Cool Cuts chart this week at no.15!

Elev-8 Coming Up, Interview on DSI

I don't play in my home-town all that often, usually I'm out of the country, but I'm pleased to say I'll be playing in London for Elev-8 on 21st July. There's an interview with me up on popular UK clubbing website Dontstayin, in advance of the night, which you can check out here. Please check DSI for more info on the event!

Armin signs She Wants Him, plus Fade Away news

I can finally reveal that "She Wants Him" has been signed to Armin Van Buuren's label Armada. It should be out later in the year! Thanks to the DJ's who've been supporting it and also those people who've been contacting me about the track - it's great to hear people are into it.

Fade Away has also just been licensed to DJ Antoine's label Houseworks, and will now also be getting a release in Germany, Switzerland and Spain. It also looks like it's just been included on the new El Divino Ibiza compilation, mixed by Franco Mulero.

Articles Published in Spain and Ukraine

Deejay Magazine, the main dance mag in Spain published a full two page interview with me this month. I'm also featured in DJam in Ukraine (along with Oliver Huntemann and Sharam Jey) For those of you that read Spanish and Russian, here are the links to the articles in full...

Judge Jules plays She Wants Him on Radio 1

There's a handful of very limited promos of my Police-sampling tune doing the rounds. It's called "She Wants Him", features a sample from "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86", and was produced together with my studio partner Kevin Edge... There's also a very tasty remix from Noiz.

Jules has now played it two weeks in a row on his Saturday Warm Up Show on BBC Radio 1... It's also got the thumbs up from Armin Van Buuren and Jody Wisternoff, and has been tipped as a track to watch in DJ Magazine here in the UK... Still no firm release plan at this stage, but with any luck a label should be signing it imminently :-)

Huge thanks to JJ for the support!!!

FortDance Tour

Talking of FortDance, I've been lucky enough to be involved with helping to organise DJs for the promotional tour again this year. For those of you that don't know, FortDance is a huge event taking place in a castle in St. Petersburg. This year it's taking place on 21st July, and features the likes of Hernan Cattaneo, Armin Van Buuren and Roger Sanchez, with BBC Radio 1 also in attendance, represented by Annie Mac (the first time they have covered an event in Russia!)

Prior to the main event, there is a 5-date club tour, taking in different Russian cities. 5 DJs have been chosen, from 5 different European countries - Tim Andresen from Denmark, me from the UK, Sebastian Davidson from Holland, David Gausa from Spain and SL Curtiz from Germany, with the events taking place in Samara, Kazan, Perm, Ekaterinburg and Rostov throughout June and early July...

Seasonal Giggage

Long time no post! As usual I've been busy with gigs and ting over the last couple of months, with some great trips to places like Dubai, Denmark, Belgium and Russia. There's some pics from February already up on my Flickr page, with more from the spring coming soon...

This month it's all about Russia, one of my favourite countries to play in. Last weekend I was in Tyumen in Western Siberia for one of the Marlboro Mixtronica parties, next week I'm playing in Kazan for the FortDance tour, then at the end of the month I'll be in Chelyabinsk for the Casa Project Openair party (I played at their club in April - had a FANTASTIC night)

See you there - paka!

Paul Van Dyk (the no.1 DJ in the world according to DJ Magazine for the last two years) has been playing my remix of Dave Lambert - "House in Play". It's due for a release in Germany on Lickin Tribe Records and Paul has been featuring it on his show on Radio Fritz. Nice one :-)

Dubai

I mentioned in a previous post that a debut in Dubai was on the cards. Well now it's actually happening, and I'll be playing at 360 Degrees for Audio Tonic on February 16th. Ive heard lots about Dubai as a clubbing city, and yes, I'm looking forward to the winter sunshine ;-)

Back In The Ukraine

This weekend I'm off to the Ukraine for some more international goodness. I'll be at Forsage in Kiev on Thursday night, then I'll be down at Sfera in Dnepropetrovsk on Saturday. I'll be joined by Ukrainian star Sender, who apart from being one of the nicest guys on the international scene, is just about one of the best house DJs I've heard anywhere. He travels around Europe gigging a fair bit (he was at Mix Club in Paris a couple of weeks ago with Joachim Garraud for example) so if you ever get the chance to see him play, trust me, it's an absolute must.
